Over the past 31 years, Abingdon Theatre Company has accumulated various honors and awards for developing and producing brave new American works.

Most recently, ATC’s 30th season Mainstage, Robin & Me: My Little Spark of Madness won 5 Broadway World Awards for Best New Play Off-Broadway, Best Actor - Dave Droxler, Best Director - Chad Austin, Best Scenic Design - Yi-Hsuan (Ant) Ma, and Best Lighting Design - Dawn Chiang.

Felicia Curry was nominated for Outstanding Solo Performance for the Vivian Robinson Audelco Recognition Awards for Excellence in Black Theatre for her performance in ATC’s Queens Girl in the World. Queen’s Girl in the World chronicles the misadventures of bright-eyed, brown-skinned Jacqueline Marie Butler, whose sudden transfer from a protective, middle class upbringing in 1950s Queens to a progressive, predominantly-Jewish private school in Greenwich Village. 

Abingdon Virtual’s premiere film, It Cries Too Loudly, garnered the 1st Place Award at the Wild Dogs International Screendance Festival, Best Cinematography at the Eastern European Film Festival, Honorable Mention at the London International Monthly Film Festival, Finalist at both the Prague International Film Awards and SHORT to the Point Festival, and accumulated 18 separate film festival selections, notably at the Portland Dance Film Festival and the prestigious San Francisco Dance Film Festival. Abingdon Virtual’s follow-up film, As Apple Pie, garnered 6 wins at various festivals, most notably Winner of Best Indie Short at New York International Film Awards; the film also received 16 selections from various film festivals, most notably Finalist at Cannes World Film Festival for Best Young Filmmaker and Semi-Finalist at Dumbo Film Festival.

In 2020, the New York Times Critics’ Pick, Get On Your Knees, written and performed by Jacqueline Novak, was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance. Also for Outstanding Solo Performance, Alex Edelman’s one man play, Just for Us garnered an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award nomination and is currently running on Broadway.

Abingdon Theatre Company’s 2018 production of The Boy Who Danced on Air, choreographed by Nejla Yatkin, was nominated for The Drama Desk LaDuca Award for Outstanding Choreography.

Nancy Opel’s performance in My Deah by John Epperson won an OBIE Award, produced in ATC’s 12th season. 

William Shuman’s one man show, En Avant! An Evening with Tennessee Williams, presented at Abingdon’s Sunday Series received an Overall Excellence Award for Solo Performance at the NYC International Fringe Festival. 

Abingdon Theatre Company also has various productions in publication such as Fix Me Jesus by Helen Sneed published and licensed by Dramatists Play Service. Samuel French has published Beachwood Drive by Steven Leigh Morris, The Goldman Project by Staci Swedeen, My Deah by John Epperson, The Frugal Repast by Ron Hirsen, The Parker Family Circus by Jan Buttram, Engaging Shaw, and Blame it on Becket by John Morogiello. 

Many ATC full-length plays have been published in anthologies. This includes Texas Homos by Jan Buttram, in “New Playwrights Best Plays of 2004-2005,” War in Paramus by Barbara Dana, in “Best Plays by Women 2005,” and Daisy in the Dreamtime by Lynne Kaufman, in “Best Plays by Women 2003.” Ten minute plays published in anthologies includes Extracurricular by Frank Tangredi, Pascal and Martin by Jan Buttram, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt by Bara Swain, in “Best Ten-Minute Plays 2012,” and Give and Take by Bara Swain, in “Best Ten-Minute Plays 2013.”
