Big things can happen in small rooms,
and nowhere is that truer than at Abingdon.
Dear Theatre Lover,
Next season Abingdon will be celebrating 25 years of developing & producing new American work by emerging and established artists. So, it is a perfect opportunity to reflect on our achievements, and to dream about our future and set new goals for the years to come.
In the 18 months since I’ve taken over as Artistic Director, it has been an honor to welcome both new and returning audience members from different generations and backgrounds to our theatre, and to witness some of our country’s finest talents entertain and inspire through the craft of storytelling — artists like Anne Bogart, Mario Cantone, Erin Davie, James Lecesne, Ralph Macchio, Charles Mee, Austin Pendleton, Dale Soules, Concetta Tomei and Michael Weller — masters all, who have brought their unique perspectives to our stage.
What I have come to realize, with pride, is that Abingdon has become a rare place where people gather to tell and hear important stories that might otherwise get overlooked. Why are they “important?” Whether staged readings, workshops or full productions, these new works share a common thread: they grapple with material that is sometimes challenging, but always engaging and universal, and all have the capacity to help us to expand our empathy for opposing viewpoints, and more importantly, for one another.
What could be more necessary in our world today than to open our eyes, ears, hearts and minds to other people’s stories? This is the difference that theatre makes. Now more than ever, I am determined for Abingdon to play a vital role in discovering, nurturing and producing our generation’s most exciting new plays, and in turn contributing to more fulfilling lives and a more conscious society.
Over the next several weeks, we’ll be announcing our plans for next season, which promises to be our most ambitious yet. We turn now to our supporters to help us usher in the next wave of artistic excellence. Every donation goes toward supporting the staff, artists and technicians who make new work happen at Abingdon.
Please help us reach our goal of $30K in 30 days by making a tax-deductible donation via the link below.
There’s never been a better or more meaningful time to invest in the future of American Theatre.
Thank you for your support,
